What is Steamworld Dig 2?
Steamworld Dig 2 is a platforming mining adventure that takes momentum from Metroidvania style games. SWD2 is developed by Image and Form International and is the second game in the Steamworld series. It launches September 21 2017 on the Nintendo Switch.
What makes Steamworld Dig 2 so great?
So as a preface, we haven’t played a Steamworld Dig game before. This is our first one, despite it being the second one (hint hint developers). So there is no bias since we haven’t played one of these games before. We have been enjoying ourselves immensely. The art style is a mix between cartoons and steampunk and the controls work flawlessly. Let me just walk you through my first adventure in the game to give a sense of how great SWD2 is. While mining my first mine, I just dug randomly wanting to get all the ores that I can find. All of a sudden my lamp went out, great (I didn’t know that could happen). So I had to climb my way out of my dig. Well, as I said before, I randomly dug my path. I was stuck.
This game has you calculating every block you dig. It throws different challenges at you to keep you enthralled and has a pleasant amount of hand holding to help you through dark times (see what I did there? Lamp? Dark? Oh nevermind..).
There are plenty of upgrades to your character, challenges to keep you playing, and story to keep you interested.
What makes Steamworld Dig 2 NOT so great?
Honestly, with 4 hours into the game I haven’t found anything to turn me away.
So what do I conclude? Steamworld Dig 2 is a fantastic game that I would recommend to anyone and everyone. It can be casual and it can be complicated. It is truly one of those games that deserves to be on everybody’s device.
I want to take this moment to thank the developers and their team for making this game and allowing us to play it.
